Adoption Procedure

If you are ready to adopt a wonderful greyhound, you’ve come to the right place. BRGA is here to walk you through every step in the adoption process. This is an exciting time for you and your family, so we want to make sure you know what to expect once you submit your application to adopt.

Step 1: Submit your application

  • Complete your online application. We do check references, so please include them. Don’t stress if you don’t have a veterinarian, thanks to our incredible members we’ve compiled a pretty extensive list of veterinarians.

  • Once you’ve submitted your application, a BRGA volunteer will check your references and call you for your phone interview. During the phone interview, the volunteer will set up a time for a home visit.

Step 2: HOME visit

  • A BRGA volunteer will bring one or more greyhounds to your home for the home visit. The home visit is a great opportunity for our volunteer to identify areas of your home that a greyhound might have difficulty with and we can often make suggestions to make the first few weeks with your greyhound easier. The volunteer will go through a list of discussion topics and answer any questions you may have.

  • The volunteer will also ask you questions to help us find the right greyhound match for your family. We really want to know your preferences on personality, activity level, size, and any other traits that are important to you.

Step 3: finding you the right hound

  • Once the home visit is completed, the volunteer presents a report to the BRGA Board for approval. If you are approved, we will begin searching for the right greyhound for your family. The entire process from application through getting your hound can take 4 to 6 weeks. The time frame will be longer if you have a cat or small dog. Also note that Hardee Hound applications have a longer wait due to the limited number of greyhounds in the program and fixed graduation schedule.

  • Now is a good time to read Adopting the Racing Greyhound by Cynthia Branigan and Retired Racing Greyhounds for Dummies by Lee Livingood, if you haven't already (see Suggested Reading).

So you’ve decided to adopt a greyhound from BRGA. What is the procedure? If I’m approved, how long before I get my dog?

  • Complete and return an application. We do check your references, so please include them.

  • You will receive a call from a BRGA volunteer for a phone interview and also to set up a home visit. A volunteer will come to your home with one or more dogs to ask and answer questions.

  • A report of the home visit is presented to the BRGA Board. If you are approved, you will be called to attend the next "Gotcha Day" and to meet your new family member.

  • Your dog will have received the following procedures from the veterinarian:

    • Heartworm check

    • DA2LP (Distemper, Adenovirus-2, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza) and CPV (Canine Parvovirus) vaccination

    • Rabies vaccine

    • Bordatella (“Canine Cough”) vaccine

    • Spay/neuter surgery

    • Clean and polish teeth

    • Physical examination

    • Tick titer testing

    • Deworming

    • Flea and tick bath

  • The adoption process can take four weeks or even longer sometimes, so please be patient.

  • Your mentor (“buddy”) will call to check on you from time to time and will be available to you if you have any questions or concerns. Our goal is for this adoption to be successful.

  • See the adoption fee page for information on the cost of the adoption and what the fee covers and provides for you.
